Nancy Wilson and Maisie Richardson

Nancy Wilson is a Grammy Award winner in jazz. She was born February 20, 1937, in Chillicothe Ohio, to Olden Wilson, who was employed at the ironworks as well as Lillian Ryan, a former domestic worker. Nancy Wilson was the only baby of six. The passion for music that her father had and his collection of records at home were a huge influence on Nancy when she was a little girl. When she was just four years old, she realized she would be a singer. The talent she developed was cultivated due to her participation in the choir at church. When she was 15, she won the talent show on T.V. and began appearing on the Skyline Melodies Tv Show while at the time she was still in high school. In the same year, she began working in nightclubs. Nancy was just 17 when she graduated highschool. After matriculating at Ohio Central State College - today Central State University - for one semester, Nancy quit to become professional performers. In 1956, she recorded her first album with Rusty Bryant's Carolyn Club Big Band with which she toured between 1956 and 1958. Nancy's initial Dot Records recording was made when she was a member of the Carolyn Club Big Band. Cannonball addederley recommended that she relocate into New York for her career, and in 1959 she relocated into The Big Town. The agent of Adderley heard about her at The Blue Morocco Night Club, Boston Road, The Bronx and she then signed her contract. Within a month after arriving in New York City. The agent he was working with signed her up to Capitol in 1960. The year she made her debut was the same year. Guess who saw today. Capitol published five Nancy Wilson records in just two years. At first, she focused on rhythm and blues, under Adderley's influence, she began to move away from R&B and began to embrace music from jazz and torch. Nancy Wilson and Cannonball Adderley's collaboration in 1962 was instrumental to propel her into the spotlight and her hit Tell Me the Truth was made available in the year 1963. This brought her a gig at New York's Coconut Grove the premier night club in America that year, and she was a household name.
