Nancy Wilson and Maisie Richardson

Nancy Wilson was born 20th February 1937 in Chillicothe, Ohio to Olden Wilson, an ironworker, as well as Lillian Ryan (a former housemaid). Nancy was the youngest of six children. Nancy loved listening to her dad's records and his enthusiasm for music. When she was four, she knew she wanted to be a musician. She discovered her talent for music through participating in choirs of the church. Following her win in a talent show in a television show around the age of 15 years old, she began to regularly appear in Skyline Melodies, while still in high school. She then dropped out to pursue a career as a professional musician. Her first record was recorded in 1956 with Rusty's Carolyn Club Big Band. They performed with her throughout 1956 and 1957. Nancy recorded her first record in the band's studio with Dot Records while in the group. Cannonball Adderley urged her to travel to New York in order to improve her career. She went to The Big Town, New York in the year 1959. After a few weeks the manager of Adderley heard her singing and hired her. Agent Adderley signed her to Capitol in the year 1960. Her debut was that year. Guess Who I Stopped Today. Capitol released five Nancy Wilson Albums in 2 years. At first, she focused on rhythm and blues under Adderley's influence she moved away from R&B and began to embrace music from jazz and torch. Nancy Wilson and Cannonball Adderley's collaboration in the year 1962 helped make her a star and her hit Tell Me the Truth was released in 1963. In the following year, she was asked to perform in New York's Coconut Grove, the most famous club in America.
