Winona Ryder, professionally Winona Ryder, was born on Winona Minnesota. Her parents named her for the town she grew up in. Michel Horowitz is her father as well as Cynthia Palmer is her mother. Ryder is Jewish. Ryder believes that her father had a Jewish origin. Ryder is the younger sister of Uria who is half-sister to Jubal & Sunyata. Ryder's family relocated to Mendocino County to California when she was seven years old. There they didn't have electricity. Ryder was a voracious book reader because there was no TV. Ryder was enrolled in acting classes when Ryder was twelve years old, at the American Conservatory Theatre. In 1986 she was offered her first major-screen appearance in the film Lucas she was only 15 years old. Ryder was bullied throughout her high school years. She hoped that her career in acting would alter that. Unfortunately, it didn't work out. However, she was determined to pursue the dreams she had. In 1988, she received her biggest break with Tim Burton's Beetlejuice. Ryder was able to continue her successful roles in many movies. In 1993 Ryder was twice nominated in the Academy Awards. One of them for her role as a character in The Age of Innocence.
